Bleach Knots on Wig: 4 Simple Steps on How to Do It
4 Simple Steps to Bleach Knots on a Wig
Before you begin bleaching the knots, make sure you have all the necessary tools ready:
-
Quality hair bleach
-
Professional developer (20 to 30 milliliters)
-
Plastic mixing bowl
-
Measuring cup
-
Applicator brush
-
Gloves
-
Aluminum foil
-
Mannequin head or a soft surface to secure the wig
-
Lace wig
Step 1: Prepare the Lace Wig
Start by securing your lace wig onto a mannequin head or a soft surface like a foam head. Ensure it is tightly attached to avoid shifting during the process. Carefully clip away any baby hairs to prevent them from getting bleached along with the knots.
Lightly spray water onto the roots of the hair. This step helps protect the roots in case the bleach mixture seeps through the lace.
Step 2: Mix the Bleach
Put on your gloves before handling any chemicals. In the plastic bowl, combine the hair bleach with the professional developer. Always follow the product instructions for the correct ratio. If no specific instructions are provided, a standard 1:1 ratio works well. For example, mixing 1.5 scoops of Ion 10 Level Charcoal Flash Lightener with 1.5 scoops of 30 or 40 volume developer is ideal for larger frontals.
Stir thoroughly until the mixture becomes thick and creamy. Avoid using the mixture if it is still runny, as it may seep into the roots and cause damage.
Step 3: Apply the Bleach to the Knots
Using your applicator brush, gently apply the bleach mixture to the knots at the front hairline. Be careful to avoid pressing too hard to prevent the bleach from reaching the roots.
Once applied, cover the bleached area with aluminum foil. Let it process for about 30 minutes, but check the wig every 10–15 minutes. Some wigs may bleach faster depending on the lace and hair type. Monitoring the time is essential to prevent over-bleaching.
Step 4: Rinse and Wash the Bleached Knots
Once you achieve the desired color, promptly rinse out the bleach. Apply a purple shampoo to neutralize any brassiness and remove residual chemicals. After rinsing, apply a conditioner and leave it on the hair for about three minutes to restore softness. Rinse thoroughly afterward.
Avoid using a blow dryer to dry the wig, as heat can damage the lace and hair. Instead, gently squeeze out the excess water and pat dry with a towel. Hang the wig and allow it to air dry naturally. Keep it away from direct sunlight to prevent further damage.
